Emergency Medical Technician

Applicants are invited to apply now for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate course being offered by the Division of Health Sciences. This is a short course which is designed to instruct a student to the level of EMT and will run for three (3) months starting from May 13 to August, 2019.


Course Description

The Emergency Medical Technician provides basic and limited advanced medical care and transportation for critical and emergency patients who become suddenly ill or are injured.  This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide care in a patient transport situation.  Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive Emergency Medical Service (EMS) response, under medical direction.  EMTs perform interventions with the basic and limited advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance.  The EMT is a link from the scene to the emergency health-care system. 


Course Objectives 

  • Train personnel to be competent Emergency Medical Technicians;
  • Enable personnel to work as a team with other medical agencies;
  • Train personnel to recognize urgent vs non-urgent patients;
  • Enable students to conduct an initial needs assessment of a scene with reference to the utilization of other emergency agencies;
  • Train personnel to provide emergency assessment and care to patients at a scene and during transport. 


Qualifications: Applicants must have English Language, Biology or Human and Social Biology and two (2) other CSEC or GCE Ordinary Level subjects. Certification in CPR & Basic Life Support will be an asset.
Duration: 3 months
Start Date: May 13, 2019
Cost of Course: $1,200.00 


Please note that fees must be paid prior to the start of the course, and that all qualified applicants will be interviewed.

Applications can be collected from the Office of the Registrar and all applications must be returned by April 5, 2019, to be processed for the interview exercise.
