Introduction

For Barbados, energy supply is critical to all aspects of economic development. Energy requirements are predominantly met through imported fossil fuels.  With the focus to draw energy from the sun and push Barbados to becoming a 100 percent renewable energy and carbon neutral island state by 2030, there is a need to train future employees to manage and work in the sector. The Barbados Community College’s Division of Technology is pleased to offer a certificate in Photovoltaic Design and Practice.

Who is this course for?

This course is perfect for an individual who is seeking to become a Photovoltaic (PV) systems designer, a site assessor, an installation supervisor, a maintenance technician, a PV OHS supervisor, a PV customer service agent or a PV salesperson. The job market can be extended to include a range of persons who interact with photovoltaic from roofer installers to electrical installers and those persons who are required to inspect systems on completion.

Course Snapshot

This is a professional training course that equips practitioners to design and safely install Grid-Tied and Battery Based Systems. It requires 100 hours of online training, 30 hours of laboratory work, and 15 hours of tutorials. You can log on at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the full duration of the specified course. You will generally need between 10-20 hours/week to complete the lesson materials and graded activities. Students can access the course anytime, from any computer with an internet connection. There are no specific times that you need to log on, the course is self-paced, but you must finish all graded materials by the end date of the course. The live instructors are there to give feedback, grade your work and you can contact them with questions on the forum discussion boards, or by email.

This course will be divided into two online training courses by Solar Energy International (SEI) in Grid Tied and Battery Based Systems. Participants will be given the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the SEI PV courses during a face-to-face practical component conducted at the BCC, using the Arizona State University (ASU) Mobile Training Kits and BCC PV Lab roof structures, PV modules, racking, and Balance of System Components (BOS).

Students will learn about site analysis, system sizing, array configuration, performance estimation, electrical design characteristics, as well as load analysis, battery bank design, equipment options, and electrical integration of system components. The SEI training courses will provide full preparation for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners' Associate Exam which students are free to complete on their own.

Course Duration

Each SEI online course will run for six (6) weeks, a total of twelve (12) weeks for the two courses. The BCC face-to-face component will run concurrently with the SEI courses for a total of fifteen (15) weeks of one three (3) hour session per week; a total of 45 hours. One hour each week will be a group tutorial review of the SEI online course material.

Entry Requirement

  1. It is strongly recommended that  prospective students complete the SEI free course in Renewable Energy.https://www.solarenergy.org/courses/introduction-to-renewable-energy/
  2. Electrical and/or PV installation experience is highly desirable but not mandatory.

Start date: 17 August 2020
