Maintenance Officer

The Maintenance Officer assists the Manager, Building and Property with professionally managing the administrative and operational functions of the Maintenance Department of the College which comprises the “Eyrie” campus and the Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute. 

Education Requirements and Experience:

  • An associate degree in Building Engineering or in a related discipline; and
  • At least seven (7) years’ relevant experience. 

Salary Scale $4,582.46 - $5,126.27 (Z10-6)

JOB DESCRIPTION

MAINTENANCE OFFICER  

SUMMARY OF CORE FUNCTIONS:     

To assist in the professional management of the administrative and operational functions of the Maintenance Department of the College which comprises the “Eyrie” Campus and the Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute, in order to provide an efficient service to all stakeholders.

 

LIST OF DUTIES: 

  1. Operational Management/Administration 
  • Lead and coordinate the functions of the Maintenance Department so as to assist the College in fulfilling its mission; 
  • Maintain a list of contractors and suppliers used by the College for various services from which names should be deleted if the suppliers and contractors have not performed to the standard required; 
  • Submit responses received to requests for tenders to the Tenders Committee for selection of suppliers to whom the work should be given; 
  • Carry out day-to-day inspections of, and repairs to the College, that are within your areas of competence in a timely manner, so as to assist the College in fulfilling its mission; 
  • Take appropriate action, in a timely manner, to effect repairs to the College that fall outside of your area of competence by adhering to the procedures established by the College administration for so doing including ensuring that the contract specifications have been met; 
  • Develop and implement a safe and effective system for the requisition, storage and distribution of supplies; 
  • Develop and implement an effective filing system to enable the easy retrieval of information; 
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date record of maintenance work carried out on the College Plant on a computer database; 
  • Identify and prioritize day-to-day maintenance work at the College; 
  • Write and submit a bi-annual report on the state of the College plant to the Board of Management through the Principal. 
  1. Human Resource Management 
  • Build and maintain good relations with students and staff within the Department and across the College; 
  • Regulate the annual vacation leave of domestic/ground and maintenance staff to ensure adequate cover at all times; 
  • Coordinate the deployment of domestic/grounds staff to ensure prompt and effective cleaning/maintenance of rooms and grounds; 
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date record of the sickness/absence of domestic and maintenance staff; 
  • Organize the annual rotation of domestic staff in the College; 
  • Monitor and record the performance standard of domestic and maintenance staff on an annual basis to be reviewed by the Human Resources & Labour Relations Manager in the presence of the staff member; 
  • Organize and assist in conducting annual performance reviews of domestic and maintenance staff; 
  • Identify the training needs of the Department and assist in on-the-job training; 
  • Ensure that staff of the Maintenance Department “sign in” and sign out on a daily basis using the device provided for the purpose. 
  1. Health & Safety 
  • Ensure full compliance with all Health and Safety, Security, Fire and Disaster Preparedness regulations as well as expedite appropriate conversation measures; 
  • Develop and implement effective preventative and emergency maintenance schedules and procedures for all sections of the College. 
  1. Finance 
  • Manage the acquisition, storage and distribution of supplies in as economical a manner as possible and in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Finance Department; 
  • All requisitions submitted must have a minimum of three (3) quotations. Should three (3) quotations not be available, this must be clearly stated with submission of quotations; 
  • Performs such other duties as fall within the scope of the area of responsibility that may be requested by any duly authorized officer.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:   

  • An associate degree in Building Engineering or in a related discipline; and 
  • At least seven (7) years’ relevant experience.  

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mission and vision of the organization;
  • Extensive knowledge of the functions and duties of the post and how they contribute to the mission and vision;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Public Service Act CAP. 25;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 2012-19;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Safety & Health at Work Act 2005-12;
  • General knowledge of the BCC Staff Manual;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Telephone etiquette;
  • Knowledge of operating electronic equipment provided. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in the use of all Microsoft applications;
  • Demonstration of good time management skills;
  • Demonstration of effective interpersonal relationship skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work speedily and accurately under pressure;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality;
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE:

  • Permanent in nature.
  • Entitled to vacation as earned, maximum of forty-two (42) days per calendar year.
  • Entitled to fourteen (14) sick days per year after one (1) year.
  • While the standard time of work is 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, you may be asked to work on outside of these hours and on Saturdays and Sundays (if necessary).
