The Board of Management of the Barbados Community College invites persons to apply for the following vacant position:

Telephone Operator – ‘Eyrie’ Campus

The Barbados Community College is a teaching institution designed to cater to the educational needs of as wide a cross-section of the post-secondary and adult population as its facilities permit. 

As a Telephone Operator, you will observe and operate the telephone switchboard and direct calls to all relevant members of staff, and be able to answer some queries from the public. You serve as the voice of the institution, offering friendly service to those calling in on the phone.  You will assist in all related functions in an efficient, courteous and professional manner that maintains a high standard of service.

Salary Scale: $2,033.73 - $2,641.81 (Z38 - Z30)

To observe and operate the telephone switchboard and direct calls to all

relevant members of staff. 


The Telephone Operator will be required to: 

  • Observe and operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming calls; 
  • Answer callers and transfer calls as required; 
  • Supply information to callers and record messages where necessary; 
  • Relay messages to the staff on the intercom; 
  • Report malfunctioning of telephone system to the telephone company; 
  • Carry out the following functions
    1. issue application forms and student literature to the public;
    2. answer queries of/or direct visitors if in a position to do so; 
    3. Perform limited clerical duties. 
  • Update and maintain internal directory; 
  • Search for contact information for external organizations when required; 
  • Assisting with the application process- contacting applicants who experienced challenges with the process etc.; 
  • Updating student information in the Student Information System (Colleague); 
  • Contacting successful applicants; 
  • Updating and maintaining internal directory; 
  • Work a shift system as well as scheduled daytime hours from Monday to Friday; 
  • Perform any other reasonable duty that he/she may be called upon to do by the Principal, Registrar or any other duly authorized person. 


  • Four (4) subjects, including English at CXC General One or Two; 


 Demonstrates knowledge of the mission and vision of the organization;

  • Extensive knowledge of the functions and duties of the post and how they contribute to the mission and vision;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Public Service Act CAP. 25;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 2012-19;
  • Relevant knowledge of the Safety & Health Act 2005-12;
  • General knowledge of the BCC Staff Manual;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Telephone etiquette;
  • Knowledge of operating electronic equipment provided.                                     


  • Proficiency in the use of all Microsoft applications;
  • Demonstration of good Time Management skills;
  • Demonstration of effective Interpersonal Relationship skills;
  • Excellent Oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work speedily and accurately under pressure;
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality;
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Temporary in nature;
  • Entitled to vacation as earned, maximum of twenty-one (21) days per calendar year; 
  • Sick days will be allowed on no pay from the commencement of employment, after which you will be entitled to fourteen days per calendar year; 
  • Based on the nature of the position, it may be necessary to work outside of normal hours, for which there will be no compensation.
