Overview

The Associate Degree in Finance Major is designed for students who are interested in the mechanics of financial activities in the corporate world. It aims to keep abreast with current global trends and initiatives and thus students are exposed to both domestic and international financial activities. Financial market operations are examined as well as the decision making techniques applied to assess performance. The formulae used to determine possible outcomes when investing in financial projects and the analytical and critical thinking skills needed to make sound decisions to maximise the efficiency and success of business ventures are examined. The programme extends to the Real Estate and Insurance sectors and enlightens students on the tools and techniques used by professionals in this line of work.

On completion of this programme students are well equipped for further studies. They are also equipped with the relevant skills needed to function as a true professional in the dynamic and ever-changing financial world.

Admission Requirements

 

The minimum requirements for entry into the College are: 

  • Four (4) passes at CSEC General Proficiency Level with Grade 1, 2, or 3 (from June 1998 only) OR
  • Four (4) passes at GCE Ordinary Level with Grades A, B or C OR
  • Any qualification considered by the College to be equivalent to the abovementioned. 

NB: English Language must be included the four (4) passes.

Mature Applicants

Persons 25 years or older who do not satisfy the above academic requirements may be admitted to the College as mature students.  Such persons may be required to attend an interview to determine their eligibility for admission.

Paths

Candidates for this programme would most likely be drawn from the business community. The programme should attract students who aspire to work with finance and investment, locally, regionally and internationally.

Careers

Graduates of this programme will enhance their competence if they are already employed in related fields. Those who are pursuing other business-based careers should be equipped to move into the finance and investment sector of the business community.  Beginners should be quite capable of working in entry level positions and quickly grasping the requirements, as they would be capable of meeting the expectations of such positions. The programme also equips students for other business careers.

Description of Courses

The Major will be covered in six semesters. It comprises six course in finance and investment along with one from public sector finance, and one accounting course, with each module earning three credits.
