The Board of Management, Principal, Staff and Students of the Barbados Community College (BCC) are saddened by the death of a distinguished scholar, educator and former Principal of the institution, Mrs Norma Holder, who passed away on Sunday 14 February, 2016. Mrs Holder was one of the original staff members who joined the College from its inception in January 1969.
Mrs Holder’s tenure with the BCC started as an Assistant Tutor in the Division of Science. She would spend just over thirty-two years with the College filling the posts of Assistant Tutor, Tutor, Senior Tutor, Deputy Principal and Principal. On her retirement she would have served as Principal for sixteen years.
Mrs Holder’s illustrious career at the BCC also saw her functioning in several capacities. She has held the post of Vice-President of the Association of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions (ACTI) and served as a member of the committee to assist in the restructuring of the University of the West Indies in the early 1990s. She also functioned as an acting member of the working committee of CXC Schools Examination Committee (SEC) and Sub-Committee of the Schools Examinations Committee (SUBSEC). Mrs Holder was appointed as a Member and Chairman of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council during the period 1994 to 1997.
We extend condolences to her husband Dr Jean Holder, her daughters Dr Janet Holder and Mrs Caroline Holder-Delacour and to the many family and friends of the late Norma Holder. May she rest in peace.
