Overview

The Paralegal Training programme offered by the Division of Commerce of the Barbados Community College was developed under a joint effort involving the Ministry of the Attorney General, Ministry of Education, Barbados Bar Association, Faculty of Law, UWI and Barbados Community College.

Objectives

The programme is designed to provide training for persons working in law offices and legal departments of government and of commercial enterprises and whose functions may include;

  • Assisting with the administration and running of the office and keeping legal accounts;
  • Interviewing clients and taking statements, writing lawyers’ letters and assisting in litigation by preparing and filing court documents and sitting court with a qualified lawyer;
  • Helping with preliminary work of conveyancing by taking instructions, assisting in searches for titles and encumbrances, preparing draft agreements and conveyances and dealing with matters of stamp duties and other taxes;
  • Preparing draft wills and helping in probate and administration matters and taking part in the distribution of assets of a deceased person after probate or grant of administration;
  • Assisting in preparing documents for the formation of a new company, the sale and purchase of business assets and other agreements connected therewith;
  • Performing legal functions in the trustee departments of banks and insurance and other commercial firms;
  • Assisting in the work of Government Ministries and Departments, and the Law Courts and Registries;
  • Practising as legal advisors and advocates in those jurisdictions where members of the police force and officers of other agencies have an audience in the summary courts/
  • Performing the routine legal work in agencies such as Legal Aid Clinics and NGOs.

Admission Requirements

  • Passes at General Proficiency Level (Grade 1 or 2) or Ordinary Level (Grade A, B or C) in four distinct subjects plus two years work experience;
  • Passes at General Proficiency Level (Grade 1 or 2) or Ordinary Level (Grade A, B or C) in three distinct subjects plus three years work experience;
  • Passes at General Proficiency Level (Grade 1 or 2) or Ordinary Level (Grade A, B or C) in two distinct subjects plus four years work experience;
  • Passes at General Proficiency Level (Grade 1 or 2) or Ordinary Level (Grade A, B or C) in one subject plus five years work experience;

N.B Persons without the above academic qualifications but who have more than five years on-the-job experience and are holding senior positions in the Government Service or in commercial enterprises will, nevertheless, be considered for admission.

Mature Applicants

Students must be 18 years of age or over.
