Overview

The programme consists of three (3) years of study. The curriculum is composed of didactic scientific knowledge relating to the laboratory diagnosis of human diseases as well as practical clinical laboratory skills.

On completion of the programme, the Medical Technology student will earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science - Medical Laboratory Technology.

 

Skills of the Medical Laboratory

At career entry, the Certified Medical Technologists is expected to demonstrate the following competencies.

  1. Perform analyses in a medical laboratory reflective of that previously learnt at the College.
  2. At internship, successfully demonstrate a knowledge of specific techniques and instruments, and perform simple maintenance procedures.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to recognise the factors which may directly affect the procedures and results, and for confirmation of results, display knowledge of more than one (1) test within each specialist area.
  4. Be versed in the use and monitoring of quality control programmes within each predetermined parameter, and be able to recognise and correct errors which may occur.
  5. Participate in the development of new and approved procedures by the pathologists.
  6. Participate in research work as assigned.
  7. Be able to function with system controls and be well organised in the logging of specimens and accurate record keeping. Prepare periodic reports of activity and maintain an inventory of stock.
  8. Have the ability to assume administrative and technical supervision of subordinate personnel not only in their area but also in the establishment of new procedures, and the evaluation of new students.
  9. Demonstrate the performance of routine procedures and assist in the medical and laboratory teaching of others.

 

Continuing Education

The Medical Laboratory Technologist should ensure that they are actively participating in continuing education programmes, to allow them to function at their maximum degree of effectiveness in professional attitudes, patient relations and integrity.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry into the College are:

  • Five (5) passes at CSEC General Proficiency Level with Grade 1, 2, or 3 (from June 1998 only) OR
  • Five (5) passes at GCE Ordinary Level with Grades A, B or C OR
  • Any qualification considered by the College to be equivalent to the abovementioned.

NB English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology or Human & Social Biology are compulsory and one additional subject. (Physics or Integrated Science).

Three (3) passes at CSEC General Proficiency Level with Grade 1, 2, or 3 (from June 1998 only) and the Pre-Health Sciences Certificate.

Applicants must be a minimum of 17 years on admission.

Students who have been enrolled in another faculty may request a transfer into this programme, but should have demonstrated a satisfactory performance while in the institution. Students from other institutions are also eligible to apply.
