Overview

The Division of Health Sciences offers a one (1) year full-time programme which is intended to supplement the general education of Prospective Health Workers, to introduce them to the concepts of health and to acquaint them with the Health Services in Barbados.

Objectives

It is designed to raise the level of education of those persons who do not meet the normal entry requirements for the professional programmes in the Division of Health Sciences.

Environment

Regulations for these are outlined in the Division’s Handbook, and students’ compliance is mandatory.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry into this programme:

  • Three (3) passes at CSEC General Proficiency Level with Grade 1, 2, or 3 (from June 1998 only) OR
  • Three (3) passes at GCE Ordinary Level with Grades A, B or C OR
  • Any qualification considered by the College to be equivalent to the abovementioned.

NB English Language is compulsory and a science subject will be an asset.

Qualified applicants are invited to attend an interview.

Description of Courses

Students must complete a minimum of four (4) subjects including English and Mathematics with a pass mark of at least 50% to be awarded a Pre-Health Certificate.

Students who have successfully completed the course will be eligible to undertake further local training in any one (1) of the following areas:

  • General Nursing
  • Environmental Health Inspection
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Health Information Management
  • Pharmacy
  • Rehabilitation Therapy Technology

Students opting for Pharmacy or Medical Laboratory Technology or Environmental Health Inspection are   required to obtain 60% or more in Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.

In this Pre-Health Sciences Programme, students must not only meet academic requirements, but must also demonstrate appropriate attitudes as indicators of suitability as Health Care Providers.
