Overview

This course exposes students to the international legal framework created by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The course examines the history of UNCLOS to the formation of the drafting of the Convention. Students will be given insight into the evolution of the various maritime zones and regimes and the underlying policy considerations contained in UNCLOS. The course also identifies the extent to which UNCLOS provisions have become part of customary international law. The course will address the general concepts of maritime jurisdiction, marine environmental protection and management, maritime regulation and enforcement, and dispute resolution in the law of the sea. At the end of the course, students should be knowledgeable in the legal issues of the sea especially as it relates to the Caribbean.
