Overview

The Associate Degree in Applied Sciences, Building and Civil Engineering prepares technician level personnel to supervise construction work involving domestic buildings, small commercial and industrial buildings (not exceeding two storeys) as well as to oversee all supporting civil engineering works and services. The overall objective of the programme is to respond positively to the need for a satisfactory blend of academic training for university admission and practical training for procuring jobs in construction work at the supervisory level.

HOW TO BECOME A CIVIL ENGINEER

In Barbados, an aspiring civil engineer's first step can be that of successfully completing the 2 year full-time (or 3 year part-time) Associate Degree (A.D) in Building & Civil Engineering at BCC. The prospective engineering student may then use the A.D qualification to regionally matriculate to UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad or UWI, Mona, Jamaica to complete the full civil engineering degree in a further three years. Extra-regionally, students are able to also gain admissions to universities in Canada, USA and Scotland, to name a few. 

BENEFITS OF HAVING A B&C ASSOCIATE DEGREE

In the Barbadian context, having an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering is a valuable asset, as it often serves as a generic qualification for jobs of a supervisory nature within the construction-oriented component of the public sector. 

Additionally, persons with the A.D in B&C are able to register with the Registrar of the Supreme Court as "draughtsman", and hence they are permitted to legally submit applications involving house plans to the Town and Country Development Planning Office, not exceeding two storeys and 5000 square feet. 

Last, but not least, the acquisition of the A.D in B&C declares the successful person as "trainable" in giving effective, direct assistance to the engineer-in-charge.

Topics include geometry and mensuration, algebra, including the solution of linear and quadratic equations and inequations. Students will also be introduced to the binomial expansion and its applications. The concepts of matrices and determinants are applied in the solution of simultaneous equations in 2 or 3 unknowns.

Techniques for the analysis of higher order matrices and further manipulation of complex numbers are introduced. In statistics, the student is taken beyond the basic statistical tools to discrete and continuous probability distributions. Concepts of linear algebra are further developed.
