Overview

The Associate Degree in Applied Sciences, Land Surveying prepares technician level personnel to assist both licensed land surveyors, civil engineers and lawyers in land related cases.  The Land Surveying Programme presents most of the land surveying activities included in the following categories: Geodetic Surveys and Plane Surveys, with emphasis on those related to Plane Surveys classified by purpose: Topographic Surveys, Engineering Surveys and Cadastral Surveys.  The overall objective of the programme is to respond positively to the need for a satisfactory blend of academic training for university admission and practical training for procuring jobs in the land surveying field which work side by side with the building and construction industry as well as the legal service businesses involving land transition or dispute.

Paths

Route 1

To become a Licensed Land Surveyor, one must complete the requisite Bachelor Degree studies in Geomatics, complete one year attachment at the Lands and Surveys Department and pass the examination of the Land Surveyors’ Board.  The Bachelor of Science Degree in Geomatics from the University of the West Indies, or the qualification in Land Surveying from an institution approved by the Land Surveying Board is vital.

Route 2

To become a Licensed Land Surveyor, one must be an Articled student for two years with a Land Surveyor, complete one year’s attachment at the Lands and Surveys Department and pass the examination of the Land Surveyors’ Board.  An Articled student must have passes in English language, Mathematics and two or more other subjects at the ordinary level of the General Certificate of Education or Mathematics at the advanced level of the General Certificate of Education in addition to English language, Physics and Geography at the ordinary level of the General Certificate of Education.
