Sustainability, peace and literacy.”
Those are the three (3) pillars championed by the Rotary Club of Barbados South and on which the Club’s continued partnership with the Barbados Community College will be based. President of the club, Marcel Murrell gave that commitment during a meeting between the two entities in the college’s boardroom recently.
Mr. Murrell also revealed plans to create a “Rotary Park” on the campus to be part of a larger space where staff and students alike can relax in hopes of helping their mental health. Other aspects of the joint partnership included a transformative tree-planting endeavor, in an attempt to beautify the campus.
During the meeting, Principal Annette Alleyne underscored the impact of extracurricular engagement on tertiary students, citing, “Students who are involved in extracurricular have a more transformative experience at the tertiary level institutions.” She also highlighted the plan to transform the Barbados Community College into a green campus. This initiative includes the ongoing tree-planting efforts, aimed at creating a calming space. Additionally, the plan of erecting a 'Peace Pole' on campus, - “an internationally recognized symbol of peace on Earth” - was proposed. This monument will bear the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in English and other translations.
In a special moment, District Governor Mr. Brian Glasgow presented a generous monetary donation to College, collected by Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Management, Dr. Idamay Denny. The funds will be used for scholarships for outstanding students in the STEM area.
