BCC Celebrates Scholarship and Exhibition Wins

That was the mood at the Barbados Community College after receiving word that eight (8) former students were named among the 2024 cohort of Barbados scholarship and exhibition winners.

Romario Bishop, Ode Millington, Arianna Lewis, and Keona Perry reached this pinnacle of educational excellence being named among the scholarship winners. The quartet gained Grade As in all their courses and their Cores to end with GPAs of 4.0.

The four exhibition winners – Anya Bryan, Tanee Clarke, Abianna Fenty, and Faith Moore - earned GPAs that ranged from 3.92 to 3.98.

Chairman of the college’s Board of Management, Dr. Allyson Leacock congratulated the students, noting that their achievements marked the institution’s best performance recently. She said, “This success underscores the dedication and hard work of our tutors and the unwavering commitment of our students to excellence. It signals a clear upward trajectory for the College, reaffirming our commitment to becoming a world-class institution synonymous with academic success and innovation. Congratulations to all who have contributed to this milestone; together, we are shaping a future where BCC continues to inspire and lead."

In her congratulatory message, Principal Annette Alleyne said “The Barbados Community College (BCC) is extremely pleased to acknowledge the outstanding academic achievements of our eight students from the various Divisions at the College”.

She further acknowledged the collaborative approach that was needed to help the teenagers achieve the level of success they did. “I want to thank the Tutors, Instructors, and Support Staff at the College, as well as the parents and guardians who created an environment that allowed them to excel. We are proud to celebrate our four scholarship and four exhibition winners and wish them success in all future endeavours”.

The BCC principal added that this year’s achievement aligns with the theme for the 2024-2025 academic year, Innovate. Elevate. Celebrate.

She explained, “The announcement of these achievements coming so early in the new academic year is a testament that we made the right choice. We had discussions and heard suggestions for a theme from staff at every level. We intend to find innovative ways to help our staff and students excel, elevate their performances, and celebrate them when they reach the pinnacle of success”.

Two of the scholarship winners have already left Barbados and are enrolled at institutions overseas. Arianna Lewis has gone on to McMaster University in Canada where she is completing a degree in Actuarial studies, while Keona Perry will continue her studies in Computer Science at the UWI, Mona in Jamaica. The other two scholarship winners, Romario Bishop, and Ode Millington, as well as the four exhibition winners, are all enrolled in the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus.   

Bishop and Millington will continue their journey in STEM education, with a bachelor's in Computer Science. Anya Bryan will study Finance and Management; Tanee Clarke, Accounting and Finance; Faith Moore, Computer Science and Accounting, and songbird Abianna Fenty will continue her pursuit of the arts through a bachelor’s in music.
