Traditionally a quiet space where students and staff hunker down over books, periodicals, and articles, Independence 2025 brought a new ‘life’ to the BCC Library through its inaugural scavenger hunt.
Themed “Hunting Bygones,” the scavenger hunt was rooted in celebrating Barbados’ Independence anniversary and focused on Bajan things of the past. The activity used the library’s two-part exhibit that also shared the Bygone Barbados theme.
The event officially got underway with the National Anthem, followed by a slew of independence-themed hits by local artistes, which set the stage for what turned out to be an intense 90 minutes of fun and spirited competition among students and staff. The participants were tasked with solving clues using information from books, artifacts, and traditional Bajan sayings within the exhibit.
When the dust settled, students Ethan Holder, Jayda Corbin, and Nathan Richards won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes, respectively, and Sophia Holligan came out on top among the staff. They were awarded gift baskets of various old-time Bajan treats for their hard work.
Library staff members Kerriann Fields and Kelah Bailey spearheaded the event; Carlyon Blackman assisted with checking the answer sheets during the hunt; and Anne-Marie Brathwaite, College Librarian (Ag), offered unwavering support.
Library Assistant, Vasco Quintyne, hailed the event a success and thanked all those who assisted with advertising, as well as all library staff who provided confectionery and prize materials or in any way aided in making the event a success.
He also thanked the individuals who contributed Bajan artifacts that helped build the exhibit, especially Hetty Stoute-Oni, Bonita Worrell, Vashti Small-Warner, Juel King, Wendy Cox, and Julia Thorington.
