In a series of case presentations with a difference, nursing students of the Barbados Community College (BCC) wowed staff and student alike with the products of the effort.
Conceptualizd by Nursing tutor Sanjean Taylor, the presentations were done differently to the methods employed in the past.
Ms Taylor explained that today’s student requires a hands on approach to learning.
And, tasked with researching and addressing a specific medical condition, the next generation of Barbadian nurses did not disappoint with attendees describing it as both impressive and interesting.
“These are digital natives so you have to get them to do things that are more hands on in order for them to really embrace the material and you know work towards learning it and mastering it.”
Encouraging her students to take ownership of their studies, Ms. Taylor used her prior experience of organising similar showings to support her pupils.
She expressed her satisfaction with the hard work on display and noted how knowledgeable the students have seemed since presenting their projects
“It gives them that blueprint to follow you know as they continue to study and certainly revise and practice as well.”
Ms Taylor explained that many of her colleagues have expressed interest in implementing similar activities in their own courses and hopes they see the same success and benefits, happy that our BCC students have another forum to show what they’re capable of.
Head of the Nursing Department, Dr. Sonia Watson-Miller congratulated all involved for an impressive showing and expressed her excitement for further implementation of alternative learning opportunities for nursing students in following editions and across the division.
“It'd be good to incorporate it into the actual teaching and learning experience in general not just at the end as a formative assessment but also as an opportunity through the classes.”
