Every year the Barbados Community College (BCC) Architectural Studies students are tasked with presenting designs as part of their final exams. Every year they deliver.
Impressed by the creativity on display, lecturers and guests engaged in excited discussion with the first and second year students, offering their feedback and encouragement.
BCC Tutor Alana Brookes was particularly pleased with the growth evident in the presentations, noting the marked improvement in their design abilities, critical thinking, and confidence in presenting and discussing their work.
Beginning work on their models and presentations 13 weeks ago, students have been hard at work throughout the semester, delivering updates on their projects every three weeks. By breaking it up into separate assignments, tutors and students were able to collaborate on the designs, ensuring that they learn from the process and finish the semester ready for their presentations.
Alana explained that the course is structured to reflect professional architectural practices, giving students valuable experience in a safe environment.
“Ultimately, we hope that students gain confidence in their abilities and develop skills that will support them both academically and professionally. By learning to plan, structure, and manage their work effectively, students not only improve the quality of their projects but also build habits that will benefit their studies and personal growth more broadly.”
Proud of their designs, students were grateful for the feedback they received and lessons they learnt throughout the course, even taking to social media to celebrate their peers’ successes and congratulate one another on a semester well-spent.
As they look forwards to their results, the college remains committed to supporting the latest cohort of Architectural Studies students and invites all those interested in a career in architecture to take their first step with the Barbados Community College.
