Jaden Johnson showed the world what Barbados Community College (BCC) students can do when he was awarded the 2026 Barbados National Energy Company Limited (BNECL) Scholarship.
Johnson, a former BCC student in the Natural Science Division, earned the scholarship for his submission on the theme “How I Intend to Contribute to a Sustainable Future in Barbados”.
Johnson said he first heard of the opportunity in 2023, at the beginning of his enrolment at Delaware State University (DSU), and realized it would be a chance to get a scholarship.
He was not surprised by his success and expected to be chosen for the scholarship despite the 60 other applicants competing for the prize. Johnson explained that he knew his grades were good well in advance of the announcement, which made him confident that he would win.
Commenting on the outcome, BCC Natural Science Senior Tutor Dr. Arlyn Linton-Jones applauded Johnson’s achievement, recognising the hard work that had gone into securing the scholarship.
“Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence continue to open doors and inspire others. Continue to pursue excellence, embrace every opportunity, and represent BCC with pride. This is another important step on your journey to success,” she said.
Johnson was incredibly grateful for the scholarship. Not only did it cover his academic requirements, but the financial ease allowed him to pursue his other passions, like finishing his diving course.
Now pursuing an internship, Johnson takes a well-deserved break from academia, but plans to further his studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
“Hopefully, I'll specialize in ecology, specifically marine biology. I'd like to study the ocean and the ecosystems that exist underneath it, as well as how to protect them,” Johnson stated.
Already an accomplished entrant into the field, Johnson will no doubt find a successful and fulfilling career waiting for him when he returns, and the entire college body eagerly watches to see where the current will take him.
