Three Agriculture Students Rewarded

Joshua Yearwood, Traude Walton, and Delano Lorde made the Barbados Community College (BCC) proud when they were awarded scholarships from the Lions Club of Barbados North.

The Natural Science students earned their scholarships after they excelled in the Agriculture Science programme. To qualify, they were required to maintain a GPA of 3.5 and above, write an essay about their plans for the sector’s future, and then ace an interview.

Traude Walton thanked the Lions for investing in his studies, explaining that their confidence in his abilities has been incredibly motivating, pushing him to perform even better.

“Agriculture is very important in Barbados, and I hope that as we continue our studies we can take what we learn here and eventually use it to make a meaningful contribution to the agricultural industry in Barbados,” Walton said.
The Lion Roy Ward Scholarship was created in honour of their charter president, with the three BCC Agriculture students being its first recipients.

Chair of the Lions Club of Barbados North Special Projects Committee Louis Ifill explained that they had been working closely with the college to create and award the right scholarship to the right students.

After a series of interviews, Ifill was confident they had made the right choice, saying,

“The Lions Club of Barbados North stands ready to assist you in whatever way we can in the development of your career in our country.”
Reflecting on the outcome, Deputy Principal Samuel Bowen offered earnest congratulations to the students and the staff who contributed to their achievements.

He also acknowledged the recent developments in Barbados’ agricultural industry, which has been the focus of national discussion recently, highlighting the importance and timeliness of these scholarships.

“As we pay special attention to this again today, I want to thank the Lions Club, the chapter that’s from the north, for taking this opportunity to not only recognize students, but also to allow students to make a difference”, Mr. Bowen noted.
