Rhythm and Resilience: BCC Dance Students Shine in Exam Performances

The Barbados Community College (BCC) was host to its annual dance exams, and friends and family of participating students showed up in their numbers to support the aspiring dancers.

Scheduled for the 15th of December in the Liberal Arts Auditorium, the exams were designed to assess students’ knowledge of their coursework and the fundamentals of dance such as movement and composition, beginning with first years and ending with second years.

Dance Tutor and coordinator of the dance programme, Shama Harding praised the students’ performance, impressed with the aptitude on display.

“It’s a freeing thing, once you’re able to let go of your inhibitions, and so I think they did well. The second years really worked on their compositions, and I’m excited to see what they do for portfolio.”

The Tutor added that she was also satisfied with the night’s turnout, explaining that the funds raised through the performances and refreshments would go towards the May dance portfolios.

BCC Dance Tutor John Hunte congratulated the students on a successful showing, highlighting their development as performers who have learnt how to improvise, choreograph and work hard.

He explained that the practicality of the exam provides the students with the opportunity to come into their own as dancers and adults.

“The ability to think creatively when given a particular task or problem helps them become more engaging citizens, so even if they move on to different aspects of their lives, I believe that some of these lessons about commitment and focus help them holistically.”

While a specific date is yet to be announced, interested dancing enthusiasts can anticipate an encore in 2026 as second years are hard at work preparing for the annual dance portfolio at Frank Collymore Hall.

Until then, the BCC congratulates the commitment of its students and staff and looks forward to another successful semester on the stage.
