Strengthening the BCC–DSU Partnership in Agricultural Education

The Barbados Community College (BCC) recently hosted delegates from Delaware State University (DSU) on October 6–7, 2025, as part of an ongoing initiative to advance the joint Bachelor of Science in Agriculture programme. The two-day visit, which included formal discussions, stakeholder meetings, and a tour of the Barbados Institute of Food and Agriculture (BIFA), focused on deepening institutional collaboration and addressing key priorities for student success, refining programme delivery, enhancing student support, and ensuring a seamless academic pathway from the associate to bachelor’s level.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the BCC–DSU articulation pathway, ensuring that BCC graduates can complete their bachelor’s degree through DSU without interruption. Detailed talks examined course sequencing, credit transfer, and scheduling for face-to-face and online components—particularly for Mathematics, Agriculture, Biology, and Chemistry majors for the first two cohorts, and examined options for expanded face-to-face classes and improved access to digital resources.

In keeping with Barbados’ national development goals and the CARICOM agricultural agenda, curriculum updates are being aligned with regional and international standards in sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and food security. This alignment supports the broader Blue Economy framework and prepares students for the evolving demands of the agri-food sector. These updates will better equip graduates to address emerging environmental and agri-business challenges across the Caribbean.

BCC and DSU agreed to enhance student advising, blended learning delivery, and digital access, including improvements in lab resources and course management systems. These efforts will strengthen the student experience and institutional capacity for programme delivery. Both institutions also discussed mechanisms for resolving registration, communication, and course-management issues to ensure consistent academic quality and transparency.

The visit also featured engagement with local partners and innovators in agri-business, fisheries, and sustainable food systems, reinforcing the link between education and workforce readiness. BCC continues to position itself as a hub for applied agricultural innovation—training graduates who are ready to contribute to Barbados’ and the region’s food and climate resilience goals. The BCC–DSU collaboration continues to position the College as a regional leader in agricultural transformation and human-capacity development
