Almost 30 campers from the Barbados Language Centre’s Camp Bravo joined their parents, guests, and organisers to celebrate five exciting weeks of learning and fun.

The first of its kind, Camp Bravo was deemed a success by both staff and students, who described the programme as a wonderful experience and expressed an eagerness to return.

Director (Ag.) of the Barbados Language Centre (BLC), Katherine Moseley-Holder thanked campers for their enthusiasm and applauded both the language learning and the personal growth she had witnessed in each camper.

“I was pleased to see how the older students were looking out for the younger ones. They would help each other, they would encourage each other, and that was wonderful.”

She also extended her gratitude to Camp Bravo’s sponsors, noting that many of the students received critical funding that allowed them to enrol in the camp.

BCC Principal Annette Alleyne invited campers to return next year, stressing the importance of learning new languages at a young age.

“Whatever a student is studying, whether it's the sciences, engineering, medicine, cosmetology, plumbing and so on, having a second language or third language puts you at an advantage.”

The camp, which began on July 6 and ended on August 7, 2026, was created in response to a national reduction in students pursuing languages at CSEC and beyond. Designed by Mrs. Moseley-Holder and her team at the BLC, Camp Bravo offered new ways for children to engage with foreign languages through games, music, video, drama and more.

“We wanted to create this comfortable, happy space, where children can learn languages in a relaxed environment and in a fun way,” said Moseley-Holder.

By enlisting the help of Language Centre students, foreign embassies and other international students, she hoped to provide an opportunity for young Bajans to interact with new languages in a relatable yet authentic way.

“The fact that the students remained for the five weeks even though it was a long camp, they engaged in the activities, and the feedback that they gave us ... it was a worthwhile experience.”

Satisfied with the success of the camp, Moseley-Holder revealed they hope to double their numbers next year and that planning is already under way.
