JOB TITLE:                        Laboratory Assistant II / Technician

SALARY:                            Z33–24, QB Z23-14

REPORTS TO:                     Senior Tutor

DIRECT REPORTS:              N/A

           

CORE JOB ELEMENTS:

Summary of Core Functions

The Laboratory Assistant/Technician is a person who assists in the smooth functioning of
laboratory/practical sessions by performing duties to the laboratory and/or workshop.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ability, through a process of elimination, to investigate the fault(s) of equipment, operation, process and devices in his/her field of competence.

2. Ability to correct the fault(s) or recommend the channel for correcting the fault(s).

3. Prepares of material required for use in Classroom, Laboratory and Workshops.

4. Presence at or ready availability to the Laboratory or practical working area in order to:

5. Replaces faulty equipment when need arises.

6. Supplies additional equipment as needed.

7. Removes excess equipment where this becomes necessary.

8. Assists in maintaining the College’s equipment, tools, apparatus and devices in good working condition through regular service and checking.

9. Assists in maintaining and promoting safety at all times in his/her working surroundings.

10. Assists in clearing of the Workshop or Laboratory after practice assignment and storing the equipment in the recommended condition.

11. Assists in maintaining an adequate supply of Laboratory instruction sheets or programmes.

12. Maintains and keeps an up-to-date inventory of all equipment and items of laboratory fittings and furniture through:

13. Regulars inventory at the end of each school term or at specified times as requested.

14. Keeps a record of all damaged equipment, breakages etc. with information of the nature and extent of the damage and any repairs done.

15. Supervises the general upkeep of the Workshops and Laboratories by repairing faulty equipment/devices.

16. Submits of reports in relation to items above.

17. Performs of any other duties related to activities which may arise from time to time and which are within the technical competence of the individual.

WORKING CONDITIONS


• Office/Indoor

• May be required to work outside of normal working hours

Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with members of staff, other government and non-governmental organizations and members of the public.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Four (4) subjects CSEC General Proficiency 1 or 2 or equivalent, including a Science subject.
• The possession of two (2) Science subjects at CAPE level;
• Certificate/Associate Degree in Laboratory Technology.
• No less than four (4) years’ service in that grade.
